Schwarzman Scholars immerse young leaders in China's global rise

In an era where global dynamics are rapidly shifting, the need for informed leadership and cross-cultural dialogue has never been more critical. This is the foundation upon which Schwarzman Scholars was established a decade ago, aiming to empower future leaders with a profound understanding of China and its role in the world.

Schwarzman Scholars is a prestigious one-year Master's program in Global Affairs hosted at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Founded by Stephen A. Schwarzman, the CEO of Blackstone, the program assembles exceptional young leaders from across the globe to enhance their leadership capabilities, foster international connections, and gain firsthand insight into China’s economic and cultural evolution in the 21st century.

Since its inception in 2016, the program has welcomed over 1,300 scholars from more than 100 countries, providing them with direct exposure to China's diverse landscapes of politics, business, and society amidst a backdrop of increasing geopolitical complexity. As Amy Celico, executive director of Schwarzman Scholars, emphasizes, “China is influencing numerous facets of the global economy and geopolitical landscape. The Schwarzman Scholars program selects approximately 150 graduate students annually through a rigorous global admissions process, allowing them to live and learn together at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University. While united by a commitment to make a global difference, the scholars pursue a wide array of career paths.

“What intrigues me most is the diversity of ambitions within our community,” Celico notes. “Some aspire to enter politics, while others aim to innovate through businesses or non-profits in sectors like healthcare, technology, and sustainability. The network formed by Schwarzman Scholars encompasses leaders from nearly every imaginable field.”

The curriculum is meticulously crafted to remain relevant and is frequently updated to reflect the changing landscape of global affairs. Core courses focus on China, global affairs, and leadership, while elective courses dive deeper into topics such as:

• China’s role in international relations
• Digital society and governance
• The transition to clean energy
• International relations theory and strategy
• Cybersecurity in the context of global affairs

Beyond academic learning, scholars participate in immersive one-week trips across various regions of China, known as Deep Dives. These excursions, conducted in small groups, allow students to explore themes of economic development, innovation, and public policy. By engaging with local companies, government bodies, and cultural sites, scholars gain a richer, more nuanced understanding of China than they could achieve from a distance.

Experiencing China firsthand

“Many perceptions about China are shaped by external viewpoints,” Celico remarks, highlighting the ongoing transformation within the nation. “Experiencing China directly allows scholars to witness its current landscape and to apply their insights back home—enabling innovation, collaboration, and meaningful change.”

This transformative experience is beneficial not only for scholars visiting China for the first time but also for those with previous exposure to the country. “We embrace both perspectives,” she adds.

A diverse community of scholars

Schwarzman Scholars prides itself on fostering a globally diverse student body. Approximately 40% of scholars hail from the United States, while 20% come from China, encompassing mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau. The remaining 40% are drawn from various countries around the world, ensuring that each cohort reflects a multitude of cultural perspectives.

Students reside together in a residential college intended to promote conversation, collaboration, and lively debates. “This environment is the essence of our program. Bringing together talented, driven individuals with varied experiences enriches discussions immensely,” says Celico.

“Exposure to diverse perspectives is crucial for developing empathy,” she continues. “By cultivating a close-knit community, scholars are constantly learning from one another, both in and out of the classroom. This experience not only spurs dialogue but also influences their future career paths.”

Building a global network

Over time, the shared experiences of Schwarzman Scholars contribute to the establishment of a robust global alumni network, which is a central component of the program's mission. “While the experience of being a Schwarzman Scholar lasts one year in Beijing, the connections formed here last a lifetime,” Celico emphasizes. “We hope our scholars will collaborate to drive global change, and our commitment to nurturing this alumni network supports that goal.”

Celebrating a decade of impact

In April 2026, Schwarzman Scholars commemorated its 10th anniversary with a grand reunion in Beijing, attended by over 1,000 current and former scholars. This milestone coincided with a period of significant geopolitical uncertainty, underscoring the importance of understanding diverse political systems and viewpoints.

“The past decade has seen dramatic global changes, and we have adapted alongside these shifts,” Celico states. “Our program is designed to address the current needs of educating a global community of changemakers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values essential for tackling pressing issues. The program's relevance will only continue to expand.”
