At just 17, he proposed to resolve a tax disagreement between two uncles by purchasing a piece of family property located approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Fredericton, near French Lake, New Brunswick.

This decision was not just a financial transaction; it marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to nature. With determination, Hanson earned money by harvesting spruce and other lumber to pay the taxes and ultimately acquire the land. This early responsibility instilled in him a profound appreciation for the land’s potential and beauty.

Embracing Nature: A Personal Journey

As a child, Hanson explored his surroundings, seeking out waterfalls, rivers, and the hidden wonders of nature. “I would have liked to have been an early explorer and to have discovered new lands in exotic places, but I decided to explore my own backyard,” he reflects. His zodiac sign, Aquarius, resonates with his affinity for water and exploration.

Rather than exploiting the land for profit, Hanson envisioned a different path. His passion for the environment led him to become an artist and photographer, capturing the beauty of the landscapes he cherished. This artistic pursuit complemented his commitment to volunteering as a trail builder, where he could give back to the land that had given him so much.

The Founding of ORWAI

Recognizing the importance of collective effort in environmental stewardship, Hanson founded the Oromocto River Watershed Association (ORWAI). This non-profit organization is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of all waters flowing into the Oromocto River Watershed, including the regions surrounding French Lake. Under his leadership, ORWAI has mobilized community members to actively participate in conservation efforts.

He recalls a poignant moment with a family who spent hours enjoying the trail, highlighting the transformative power of nature on family bonds.

The Creation of the Hanson Nature Preserve

After years of dedication to land stewardship and community service, Hanson’s dream of establishing a nature preserve came to fruition in September 2025. The newly created 162-hectare preserve is a testament to his lifelong commitment. It features:

• Wetland meadows teeming with diverse flora and fauna.
• Two brooks and a stunning 52-acre pond.
• Extensive old-growth forest that serves as a habitat for various wildlife.
• A boat launch providing access to the Oromocto River.
• A nine-meter-high steel birdwatching tower, perfect for observing local birdlife.

Hanson’s connection to nature is evident in his words: “I have always loved the beauty of nature, the quietness, and the connection I feel when I walk a nature trail.” He emphasizes the importance of escaping urban life, where light pollution can detract from the natural experience, and advocates for the mental health benefits of immersing oneself in the outdoors.

One of the natural treasures within the preserve is a remarkable 260-year-old white pine tree, so large that it requires three people to encircle it with their arms. Such features not only enrich the preserve's biodiversity but also serve as a focal point for visitors, reminding them of the importance of preserving these ancient witnesses to time.
